It appears to be commonly held that Ubbeston is based on the Viking name of Ubba or Ubbe or Hubba. Ubba's farmstead. A famous Ubba is believed to be the brother of Ivar the Boneless and Halfdan, who were all leaders in the Great Army. They were the sons of Ragnar Lodbrok and they are reputed to have slain King Edmund as part of the campaign of revenge for their father's killing. It is doubtful it was this Ubba who gave his name to our tiny hamlet, as he had to Hubbastone, his supposed burial place in Northam, Devon, but it's exciting to think it could have been.
The name has been written in a variety of forms through the ages and is still given alternative spellings today.
