Baldry, Charlotte Sacred to the memory of Charlotte Baldry spinster? (late of Laxfield and formerly of Wilby in this county) who died July 22nd 1844 aged 71 years

The Baldrys were well documented in the Ubbeston area as far back as the beginning of the 18th century at least. On the Baldry Family History Society website, the earliest records of the family are in Cratfield in the early 17th century.

Baldry, Joanna Here resteth the body of Joanna, wife of Simon Baldry of Ubbeston, who was a diligent and faithful servant, a dutiful and loving wife and at all times to the sick compassionate and to the poor charitable. She departed this life in hopes of a better on the 28th day of December in the year of Our Lord 1731 of her age 70

Joanne Clark married Simon Baldry 5/10/1706 at Ubbeston.

Baldry, Simon Here lieth the body of Simon Baldry late of Ubbeston yeoman. He lived in this parish above 56 years being ever ready to relieve the poor and needy and to be assistant to his friends and neighbours. He departed this life the 20th day of November in the year of Our Lord 1739 and of his age 75

Simon Baldry was baptised in Ubbeston 6/1/1742.

On the 1871 census, William is listed as a farmer of 65 acres, born in Cratfield and now partially blind. His wife is Elizabeth, 38, born in St James South Elham. Their son, William is 22, born Ipswich. The second son, Benjamin, born Cratfield, is 21. There is a second daughter, Louisa, (Elizabeth having died in 1868) who is 17 and born in Cratfield. Another son is listed, also called William! He is 7 and born Ubbeston.

On the 1861 census John Burgess junior, miller is listed as being born in Cratfield in 1834. He is married to Ellen who is a dressmaker. They live in Ubbeston Green, at the Mill House? His father, John Burgess senior is from Stradbroke and is a cattle dealer. His mother, Maria, is from Norfolk.

The Tithe Apportionment and the 1841 census show James Canham, farmer and his wife, Elizabeth living at Green Farm, on Lord Huntingfield's land with son?, James (25) and a servant

The 1851 census shows James Canham born 1809 farmer of 87 acres (Green Farm?) with wife, Harriet born Badingham in 1816. They have 4 children: Eliza (9), James (7), Thomas (5), Anne (3). One house servant.

Benjamin is shown on the 1871 census living at Ubbeston Hall and farming 810 acres. He is 62 and born in Fressingfield. His wife, Emma, is 44 and from Shimpling in Norfolk. Samuel G., their son, is 25 and his brother, James is 18. Both born in Shimpling. Daughter, Elizabeth A., 14 , and son, Charles W., 13, are both from Friston.

Garford, Ernest Bertram & Ada May In loving memory of Ernest Bertram Garford who died 7th Dec 1966 aged 75 years. Also Ada May Garford who died 8th Nov 1967 aged 74 years. Reunited

On the 1911 census Ernest Bertram appears as Bertram Ernest. He is 19, single and a farmer's son working on the farm. (Hill Farm - see below)

Garford, Francis Joseph & Lydia In ever loving memory of Francis Joseph Garford died July 31st 1935 aged 70 years. Also of his loving wife Lydia Garford who died December 23rd 1951 aged 88 years

Francis, 47, and Lydia, 48, appear on the 1911 census. They live with their 3 sons (Bertram Ernest, 19, Francis Joseph, 21, Wilfred, 16) and daughter (Lydia known as Lily) at Hill Farm, now divided into 2 cottages. Francis is a fruit grower and farmer. The whole family is listed as being born in Wisbech, Cambridge.

Hart, James & Adelaide In loving memory of James Hart [died] August 31st 1909 aged 77 years. Also [of] Adelaide wife of the above [died] June 7th 1910 [aged] 80 years. Their toil...And they are fully blest. They fought the fight vic[toriously]. And entered into rest

James Hart, senior, is shown on the Tithe Apportionment to be living in a cottage owned by Lord Huntingfield. (201b on the Tithe Map) (Allen's Farm/Ubbeston Lodge site?)

James Hart, son of James and Sarah Hart, is 16 on the 1851 census and an agricultural labourer as is his father. By 1861 he is married to Adelaide born in Cratfield in 1832. They have 2 children: son Asaph born1858 and daughter Julia born 1860. Another son, George, is 19 by the 1891 census and living with his parents, James and Adelaide 'Nr the church'. Asaph is married by the 1981 census. He has one daughter and two sons born in Ubbeston. Their address is The Green. He is a wheelwright.

Another James Hart, 50, born Heveningham is found on the 1911 census. Presumably son of the above James? He's married to Emma, 59, born Chediston. They have a daughter, Harry? and four sons: George, Teddy, Leonard and Arthur. All the children were born in Ubbeston. James and Emma had 12 children, 3 of whom died.

Huson, Robert To the memory of Robert Huson of this parish who died March 25th 1883 aged 67 years

The Tithe Apportionment shows Robert Huson owning just over 53 acres which he rented to Samuel Stopher and George Cracknell (Lodge Farm now known as Blackberry Farm).

The 1851 census shows a Robert Huson widower and farmer of 54 acres (presumably Lodge Farm). He was born in Ubbeston in 1785. In 1829 he is Church Warden. Possibly this is Robert's father? A William Huson was the blacksmith in 1815 and an overseer according to the parish register. The second Ubbeston Town Book shows a John Huson as overseer in 1789.

Jonathan is listed on the 1851 census as being 18, unmarried and a farm labourer born in Ubbeston. His father John was also born in Ubbeston. By the 1861 census he is married to Emma, born in Cratfield in 1837. They have 2 sons: George born 1857 and Antony born 1859

Mumford, Edward & Florence Ada In loving memory of Edward Mumford died 20th Feb 1956 aged 79 years. Also his wife Florence Ada died 15th Nov 1971 aged 86 years

The Mumfords lived at Lodge Farm (now Blackberry Farm)

William and Mary appear on the 1871 census, both born in Norfolk. William is a farmer of 93 acres (Lodge Farm?). He is 27 and his wife, 26. Henry, their son, is 2 and born in Ubbeston. Their baby son, William, also born in Ubbeston, is 10 months old.

There is a 'Randall's piece' on the Tithe Map (no. 105) It was farmed by William Skeet and owned by Rt Honorable John Hookham Frere. Randall's meadow (No. 104) was farmed by Fisher Garnham and owned by William Adair Esq

The 1861 census lists David, born in Ubbeston 1843, a Miller's Servant, living in Ubbeston Green.

The 1891 census shows David , 49,to be living with his family at the Wheat Sheaf. He is a beer retailer. His wife, Harriet, is 39 and born in Ubbeston too. They have 2 daughters, Harriet,17, and Daisy, 6. They also have 2 sons, Charles, 15, and William,7. All the children were born in Ubbeston.

The 1911 census shows Harriet (59, born Ubbeston), David's widow, living with her 82 year old father, Samuel Welton, who is a widower and born in Heveningham.

John Simpson, brother of David (above) was shown on the 1861 census as being born in Ubbeston in 1848 and living in Ubbeston Green

The 1841 census shows Robert an Agricultural Labourer living with Sarah his wife and 5 children: George (8), Harriet (6), Emma (4), Mary Ann (2) and John (0). An Elizabeth Simpson (69) possibly Robert's mother lives with them.

By the 1851 census the whole family, Robert (56), Sarah (45), George (18), Harriett (17), Emma (14), plus David (9), Charles (4) and John (3) are all in the Blything Union Workhouse [Bulcamp].

Skeet, Elizabeth & William & Georgianna Memory of Elizabeth wife of William Skeet who died January 16th 1835 aged 32 years. Though dread of death …True faith in … will. Also of William their son who died April 21st 1835 aged 9 months. And of Georgianna Skeet died May 22nd 1865 aged 20 years. To depart and be with Christ...

Elizabeth's unmarried name was George according to the christening records of William and Elizabeth's daughter, Anna, in 1829. See next entry below

We find Georgiana Skeet (6) sister to William (9) and daughter of Mary Ann, widow and farmer of 104 acreson the 1851 census. They have 5 servants. William, her father has died. (See Skeet, William & Thompson George)

William junior is head of the household in 1861. The family is farming 105 acres and employing 5 men. Mary Ann and Georgianna are living with their brother at Ubbeston White House, Sandy Lane.

Georgianna was christened on October 20th 1844 at Ubbeston Church.

Mary Ann the younger's christening record in 1839 shows the mother's maiden name as Mary Ann George.Thompson George was christened 8th November 1842

Louisa Smith is listed on the 1911 census. She is 41, from Denham and married to the miller and corn merchant, William Smith, 39, from Framlingham. They have 3 sons, Edward, 8, Claude, 6 and William, 4. There are 2 stepsons both 13 named Charles and Frederick Cole. We can assume their father was Louisa's first husband, Henry John Cole who was buried at Ubbeston. All 5 choldren were born in Ubbeston. They live at the Mill House, Ubbeston Green. (See Cole above)

Smyth, Charles In memory of Charles Smyth who departed this life November 21st 1847 aged 38 years

The 1841 census shows a Charles SMITH, miller living at The Mill House with Charlotte his wife and his 3daughters Elen (3), Ann (2), Pheba (1). They have one servant. There were Smiths milling in Ubbeston in the 20th century until WW2.

The Parish Council records show a Simon Smyth being paid an annual salary of £10 for the office of overseer.

Stopher, Richard Richard Stopher dyed November 23rd 1732 aged 79 years

There is a Mary Stopher living with the Ingate family (farmers) in 1841. She was born in 1796 and appears to be Hannah Ingate's mother. Was she married into the same family of Stophers?

The Tithe Apportionment shows a Samuel Stopher renting land from Robert Huson

A William Warn (sic) is listed on the 1911 census. He is 23, a farm labourer born in Linstead. His sister, Jane, with whom he lives, is married to William Keable and they have a 16 month old daughter, Elvina, born Heveningham like her father.

Although Alice is buried in Ubbeston, it seems she lived in Bressingham at the end of her life.

Watkins, Rev. Edwin Arthur Affectionate remembrance of the Reverend Edwin Arthur Watkins vicar of the parish for 31 years who entered into rest Oct 4th 1907 aged 80 years. On Earth serving the Lord with all [humility?]

By 1876 Edwin became Vicar of Ubbeston 'where he lived in a ''commodious vicarage house'' [the Old Rectory today] with seven acres of glebe land. He stayed there for the rest of his life ...His wife and daughter pre-deceased him, but his son Arthur was to become a civil & mechanical engineer in London...

Welton, Caroline & Susan In loving memory of Caroline the beloved wife of Samuel Welton who died March 10th 1911 aged 62 years Thy will be done and of Susan [his first wife?] …. aged 42 year

Welton, Samuel & Harry Garnham In loving memory of Samuel Welton died Feb 14th 1914 aged 89 years 'Peace perfect peace' . Also Harry Garnham beloved son of the above died May 14th 1912 aged 28 years

The 1851 census shows Samuel Welton, agricultural labourer, born in Heveningham 1829 living with his wife Susan born in Badingham in 1828.

By 1891 Samuel is listed as 61 and described as a labourer. His wife, Caroline (second wife) is 43 and born in Huntingfield. Her maiden name or first married name could be Mouser as there is a Florence Mouser, 20, born in Huntingfield listed as a daughter. Three further children, Emma, 9, Harry (presumably Harry Garnham), 7, and George, 4 all born Ubbeston. Another child listed as Daisy/ Welton is one and born in Linstead Magna.

On the 1911 census he is a widower again and living with his 59 year old daughter, Harriet and 24 year oldson, George Edward, born in Ubbeston.

Harry Garnham Welton is shown on the 1911 census as being 27, an agricultural labourer and newly married to Edith, 24, born Huntingfield. Son, Clifford Harry is seven months old and born in Heveningham
